HIV Prevention Breakthrough Drug Faces Access Barriers

Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly HIV prevention injection, has shown remarkable efficacy in trials, but access remains limited. International HIV funding fell 18% in 2025 to $7.3bn, its lowest in nearly two decades, and prevention recipients dropped from 1.4 million to 1.1 million. While Gilead supplies the drug at no profit in some countries, generic versions expected in 2027 will exclude at least 26 middle-income nations, including Brazil and Mexico.
