Verity review: Strong cast, underwhelming mystery

Verity, Michael Showalter's adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel, stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. The psychological thriller follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, hired to complete a novel for injured author Verity Crawford, whose disturbing manuscript raises questions about the truth. Critics say the film works better as melodrama than mystery, with strong performances but a less satisfying payoff.
