Swiss glaciers lose 20 percent of ice in five years

Swiss glaciers lost 5.5 percent of their ice volume in the year to September 2026 and nearly 20 percent since 2021, according to GLAMOS and SCNAT. Record summer heat and low winter snowfall drove the melt, which threatens Alpine tourism, hydropower and water supplies.
