Global life expectancy reached 73.3 years in 2023, close to the 73.4 years in 2019 before the pandemic, the WHO reported. However, healthy life expectancy recovered more slowly, standing at 62.8 years, 0.4 years below 2019. Noncommunicable diseases now cause 74% of deaths, with ischaemic heart disease the leading killer. Covid-19 dropped out of the top 10 causes.
