Nearly a quarter of marriages in Scotland last year involved couples who did not live there, with 6,596 of 27,191 weddings registered in 2025 to non-resident partners. Gretna Green alone hosted 3,492 of these, drawn by its historic runaway-marriage tradition. Couples from the US, Poland, Chile and Moldova cite castles, scenery and heritage as key attractions.
