A new exhibition at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess, traces how the ancient Greek goddess of love became one of art's most controversial figures. Curator Anja Ulbrich says Aphrodite, worshipped as goddess of all people, was long a target of censorship, from Mark Twain's 1880 condemnation of Titian to a 1914 suffragette attack on Velázquez's Rokeby Venus.
