India Still Accounts for One in Three Child Brides Globally

India accounts for one in three child brides worldwide, with one in five young women married before 18, experts warned on the International Day of the Girl Child. Prevalence has fallen from over 50 percent in 1996 to about 20 percent, but five states — Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh — hold more than half the country's child marriages.
