Supreme Court to examine blanket immunity for election commissioners

The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to examine pleas challenging Section 16 of the 2023 law granting blanket civil and criminal immunity to the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued notice to the Centre, seeking a response in four weeks. Petitioners RJD MP Manoj Jha and activist Arun Agrawal argue the protection exceeds that given to the President, MPs and judges.
