Edmund Richardson won the £50,000 Baillie Gifford prize for nonfiction for Alexander: God, King, Man, the first ancient history title to take the award since it was founded in 1999. Judges praised the Durham University classicist's "blockbuster history" and its use of new technology and recent archaeological discoveries. He beat a six-strong shortlist including Patrick Radden Keefe's London Falling.
