On Aug. 9, 1976, the Soviet Union launched Luna 24, its final moon mission, from Baikonur Cosmodrome. The robotic probe landed in Mare Crisium, collected 170 grams of soil, and returned to Earth on Aug. 22. The samples contained traces of water, about 0.1% by mass.
