Canadian wildfires cut solar power by 6.38 TWh in 2023

A study in Nature found that smoke from 2023 Canadian wildfires reduced solar electricity generation across North America and Europe by 6.38 TWh over five months, a 2.8% drop. This caused an estimated $1.9 billion economic loss and 2.1 megatons of CO2 emissions. The smoke blocked sunlight, affecting solar panels far from the fires.
