Japan now has a record 107,677 people aged 100 or older, the 56th straight annual rise, with women making up nearly 88 percent. The milestone comes as births hit an all-time low and the fertility rate fell to 1.14 in 2025, leaving a shrinking workforce to fund pensions, healthcare and elderly care.
