The Supreme Court on Friday questioned whether complete liquor prohibition works, citing five consequences: lost government revenue, enforcement costs, police corruption, illegal distilling and a resulting drug menace. Justices Pardiwala and Vinod Chandran made the observations while striking down Maharashtra Poisons Rules 18A and 18B, introduced after the 1991 Mumbai hooch tragedy that killed 93 people.
