Atlantis Docks with Mir on This Day in 1996

On Sept. 19, 1996, NASA's space shuttle Atlantis docked with Russia's Mir space station during the STS-79 mission, delivering supplies and equipment. The mission marked the first-ever U.S. astronaut crew change by a visiting shuttle and was the fourth flight of the Shuttle-Mir program.
