On Sept. 20, 1970, the Soviet Union's Luna 16 soft-landed in the Sea of Fertility, becoming the first robotic spacecraft to collect and return lunar soil. It retrieved 101 grams, succeeding after five failed Soviet attempts. This was the third lunar sample brought to Earth, following Apollo 11 and 12.
