Senegal health system strained as doctors strike over pay

Doctors, pharmacists and dental surgeons in Senegal have staged strikes over recruitment, pensions and hospital investment, disrupting routine care while emergency services continue. A difficult birth in Dakar has highlighted the pressures on public hospitals, where equipment is scarce and patients travel hundreds of kilometres for diagnosis. The unions say their demands date back to 2023 and remain unanswered.
