Scientists say El Niño 2026 is set to become the strongest in at least 1,000 years, with sea surface temperatures already 3.05°C above the 1991–2020 average before peaking. The previous record was 3.02°C in November 2015. The WMO warns the phenomenon will continue until February 2027, driving heatwaves, floods and monsoon disruption worldwide.
