US sanctions ground Iranian airlines, forcing travellers onto land routes

New US Treasury sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines have shut carriers out of most foreign airspace, with neighbours including Oman, Azerbaijan and Georgia halting services. All but a handful of flights to Turkiye, UAE and China were cancelled as a wind-down period expired, pushing thousands of travellers toward land crossings and threatening tens of thousands of aviation jobs.
