On Sept. 24, 2014, India's Mars Orbiter Mission, or Mangalyaan, entered orbit around Mars, making India the first country to reach the Red Planet on its first attempt. Launched in November 2013, the $74 million mission was primarily a technology demonstration and operated for over a year, orbiting Mars through October 2022.
