An algae bloom up to 100km long has forced five of Israel's six desalination plants to shut down for days, with experts linking it to untreated sewage from Gaza's destroyed wastewater infrastructure. Since October 2023, 90% of Gaza's water and sanitation systems have been destroyed, leaving 45,000 cubic metres of sewage flowing into the Mediterranean daily.
