Banks to Monitor Merchants as UPI MDR Rules Take Effect

Banks will monitor merchants to ensure the Merchant Discount Rate on UPI transactions is not passed on to consumers, government sources said. The Indian Banks' Association will develop a mechanism and launch awareness campaigns in regional languages clarifying that customers need not pay extra. The Finance Ministry will meet the IBA and consult merchant bodies including CAIT on implementing the framework.
