The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed new rules to stop non-dairy analogue products from being sold or marketed as 'paneer'. The draft regulations, part of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2026, would require products not derived from milk to remove 'paneer' from their names, labels, and marketing. The move follows concerns raised in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in March 2025 and a subsequent state ban. FSSAI has invited public comments for 60 days.
