California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1267, setting the minimum marriage age at 18 and ending provisions that allowed minors to wed with parental consent and judicial approval. The law takes effect January 1, 2027, making California the 18th state to ban the practice since 2018. Child marriage remains legal in 32 US states.
