Eighth-grader builds low-cost air sampler to detect bacteria

Bailey Quinn Frank, an eighth-grader at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, designed a low-cost air sampler using small fans and filter paper to collect airborne bacterial DNA, aiming to support health surveillance in rural communities with limited diagnostic tools. Her project made her one of 30 national finalists in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.
