Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded for Optogenetics Breakthrough

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel, and Karl Deisseroth for developing optogenetics, a technique that uses light to control specific cells. Their work, which began in the early 2000s, has transformed neuroscience by allowing precise manipulation of brain circuits. The laureates will share SEK 12 million.
