Chang'e-6 soil reveals rare metallic iron on Moon's far side

Scientists studying soil from China's Chang'e-6 mission have found face-centred cubic gamma iron, a metallic form never before seen in natural lunar samples. The nanoscale particles, preserved inside impact glass from the Moon's far side, show unusual magnetic behaviour that may help trace the Moon's ancient magnetic field. The study appears in PNAS.
