Drought Exposes Lake Hartwell Trash; Volunteers Remove 8,300 Pounds

A prolonged drought has lowered Lake Hartwell, exposing normally submerged shoreline debris. A cleanup by 148 volunteers collected about 8,300 pounds of trash, including a record 36 tires, across 14 locations in five counties. The low water stems from drought and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers restrictions due to seepage at the Clemson Lower Diversion Dam Saddle Dike.
