Atlantis Launched on STS-112 to Build ISS Backbone

On Oct. 7, 2002, NASA's space shuttle Atlantis lifted off from Kennedy Space Center's Pad 39B on mission STS-112. The flight delivered the S1 truss segment, a key piece of the International Space Station's primary backbone. The construction mission advanced assembly of the orbiting outpost.
