Blacktip sharks detect sounds from nearly 250 feet away

A Florida Atlantic University study found wild blacktip sharks can detect low-frequency sounds from up to 74 metres away and turn sharply away from the source. Using an underwater speaker and drone footage off southeastern Florida, researchers recorded 209 responses, 71.6% in the acoustic far field. The sharks ignored high-frequency control sounds, suggesting directional hearing at unexpectedly long range.
