US Adds Torture Charges Against Venezuela's Maduro and Wife

US prosecutors on Thursday charged former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores with conspiring to torture political opponents and American citizens, adding to existing drug trafficking charges. The superseding indictment, unsealed in Manhattan federal court, details alleged abuses including electric shocks and beatings against nine people, three of them US citizens. Both face a mandatory minimum of 50 years if convicted. They deny the charges.
