Afghanistan emerald auctions draw global buyers despite primitive mining

Afghanistan's Panjshir valley has held 23 emerald auctions this year, selling nearly 3,000 carats in the latest sale and generating about $6.12m in total. More than 15,000 people work in the mining sector, but miners rely on basic tools and face landslides and avalanches. Officials seek international investment and processing facilities to standardise exports.
