NASA's M2-F1 Lifting Body Makes First Glide Flight

On Aug. 16, 1963, NASA's wingless M2-F1 aircraft prototype completed its first glide flight, towed to 5,200 feet by a C-47 and piloted by Milt Thompson. The successful landing proved lifting-body aircraft could be controlled, offering an alternative to capsule reentry during the space race.
