Melting sea ice from climate change has opened up East Greenland waters, allowing giant whales like humpbacks, fin, and minke whales to feed there in large numbers. Scientists recorded hundreds of sightings, with humpbacks rising from none before 2006 to 150 in 2024. The shift, described as a major ecological regime shift, may benefit these whales but threatens Arctic species like narwhals and belugas.
