Berlin's Left party won the state election with 25.7 percent, making its Turkish-origin leader Elif Eralp likely the city's first mayor with an immigrant background. The result cheered pro-migrant residents and young voters, while the far-right AfD came third with 16 percent and also won a state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the same day.
