NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured layered deposits in Arabia Terra that resemble wavy coral reef structures. HiRISE co-investigator Cathy Weitz says the rhythmic layers may stem from global cyclic processes such as dust storms and groundwater. Erosion has since carved pits and jagged edges, with wind-blown ripples covering parts of the formation.
