In 1961, a volcanic eruption on Tristan da Cunha, the world's most remote inhabited island, forced all 264 residents to evacuate to England. They traded a simple life for modern Britain, where cars, shops, and nine-to-five work were alien. Most eventually returned after the volcano quieted.
