The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The 82-year-old Belgian-American physicist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison led the Antarctic observatory, opening a new kind of astronomy. He said the award was a great surprise.
