Scientists have found that radioactive particles from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster remain highly radioactive and largely unchanged after nearly four decades. The study, by researchers from Leibniz University Hannover and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, analyzed six particles and discovered that some retain their original uranium dioxide fuel structure. These particles act as persistent reservoirs of fission products and actinides, posing long-term environmental risks.
