Study Reveals How Bacteria Detect and Fight Viral Attacks

Researchers have discovered a new mechanism by which bacteria detect viral attacks: a phage-produced protease cuts a bacterial sensor protein, triggering a fatal immune response. The finding, published in Science, sheds light on the CBASS pathway, which is evolutionarily related to human immunity, suggesting the defence dates back to the common ancestor of bacteria and humans.
