Eight orangutans released back into Borneo wild after fires

Eight critically endangered orangutans have been released into a Borneo reserve after wildfires threatened their habitat. The three mothers, three daughters and two males were rescued in August and September when fires, intensified by El Niño, destroyed forests. Indonesia rescued 46 orangutans in total. Around 104,000 remain in Borneo and Sumatra, down from over 230,000 a century ago.
