Invasive rats found on five US Virgin Islands cays

A wildlife survey of six offshore cays in Virgin Islands National Park recorded black rats on five islands and green iguanas on one. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Caribbean Coastal Program led the assessment with Island Conservation, drawing on older records and fieldwork in December 2025. Rats prey on seabird eggs and chicks, threatening nesting species such as the red-billed tropicbird and roseate tern.
