Sonia Gandhi says Emergency was imposed constitutionally

In an interview with The Hindu ahead of her memoir's release, Sonia Gandhi said the 1975 Emergency was imposed constitutionally, though democratic rights were curtailed and habeas corpus suspended. She said Indira Gandhi was struggling with violent protests and organised unrest, and later apologised for excesses. The BJP accused her of justifying the Emergency.
