Merz Vows to Stay After CDU's State Election Losses

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to remain in office despite exit polls showing damaging defeats for his CDU party in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He called the result "a disaster" but insisted his economic, tax and welfare reforms must go ahead. The far-right AfD was projected to win the most votes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, while Die Linke led in Berlin.
