On Sept. 28, 1962, Canada launched its first satellite, Alouette 1, from California on a Thor-Agena rocket. The mission was a partnership with NASA, predating the Canadian Space Agency. Alouette 1 studied Earth's ionosphere, the ionized region of the upper atmosphere.
